Any Suggestions On How To Clear Up Hammer Toes As I Used To Diabetic ?

I have hammer toes and recently developed a hematoma under the nail. My orthopaedic surgeon will not correct my hammertoes because I used to be a diabetic. (No longer as I have had gastric bypass surgery three years ago - and I never was on insulin only diet controlled). Any suggestions? I also have neuropathy in my feet from being a former diabetic as well as I have charkot arthropathy on my left ankle. The hammer toe is on my right foot. Would you consider surgery or can you refer me to someone who would be willing to correct the hammer toe. I wear a size 11 shoe and it is very difficult to find shoes especially with the charkot problem

Diabetologist 's  Response
Dear sir

Hammer toes with hematoma under the nail is very common in patients with long standing diabetes.

It is very well caused by neuropathy and spasms of the tendons..

It is very risky condition because it may cause ulcerations with is difficult to heal

The best way to treat is through specialized foot wear and arthrotics to correct the deformity.

It is indicated to undergo foot imprintation and mechanical offloading using footwear.

Thanks
