does Using bottle for feeding milk causes tooth decay ?

Iam having 6 month old child. I visited a pediatricina for her immunization. He saw me giving milk to my child in the bottle. He said to stop the bottle feeding immediately. He said bottle feeding will cause toothache in the child. Is it true? How does this is related to bottle feeding?

It must be realized that bottle feeding at night before sleep results in Nursing bottle caries where all teeth become decayed except the lower front teeth. Pooling of milk around the teeth occurs which results in decay of teeth. This habit should be stopped to prevent decayed teeth. Clean your childs teeth using a sterile guaze wrapped on your finger after every feeding.

hello darsh,
bottle feeding directly wont cause decay. but if the shild sleeps without cleaning the mouth after taking milk then decay will occur, especially the upper teeth which is known as nursing bottle caries. take care.

Dentist, Endodontics Dr. Manisha Rao's  Response
Hi, bottle feeding causes decay of teeth when the child keeps the milk bottle for a long time in mouth and usually sleeps with the bottle in mouth. The milk accumulates around the teeth. Repeated accumulation of milk in the mouth causes demineralisation of the teeth due to bacterial growth. so bottle feeding is safe if the child is fed and the bottle removed quickly and the teeth cleaned with a wet cloth immediately. Hope this helps you. Take care!

Yes bottle feding causes toothache/gum ache in child as the child needs to suck harder on the bottle. also the risk of loose motions, and other diseases in the child also increases. it is not good to use bottle for feeding.

My daughter is 4 years old. She had tooth decay and doctors said it was due to bottle feeding at the age of 2 years. We stopped after that. But her front 4 teeth is decayed and broken and is black in color. Even few of her lower teeth are decayed. She doesnot complain of any pain. But we feel very sad to see her teeth. No issues with her diet. Now she brushes twice a day and rinses her mouth after every meal. We consulted couple of doctors and few of them said not to worry. One of the asked us to visit at the age of 5 years and he will remove the front four teeth using root canal. We are worried if there is any other simpler solution. I heard root canal treatment is very painful. Can you please provide some guidance.

I am scheduling an appt for him Monday, but what do you recommend...pulling teeth under anesthesia,; pulling teeth with a sedative and nitrous(?) and then restrained in a papoose??? What would you recommend for him todrink?? H eloves Motts for Tots with 40 percent less sugar and immune health, and he loves hot it time to switch to almond or soy milk (as he allergic to cows milk) and water???

Hello, my name is Gary. I have used Your site many years to look up medical and drug information. I used to take the drugs Neurontin for 2 years then Gabapentin for 1 year after that. I was told when it was prescribed to me for nerve pain and diabetic neuropathy the main side effect was drymouth and no mention of any others. I had healthy teeth when I started taking it but after 3 years my teeth literally were rotting out of my head. My dentist quoted me $800.00 to do all of my needed dental work. Six months later he told me that quote was out the window because he had never seen anyones teeth decay as much and as fast as mine had. The $800.00 after six months became almost $4000.00 of severe decay. In 2004 I looked on Your site under side effects of Neurontin and found it said accelerated tooth decay was a side effect. That explained it. My teeth were ruined. I saw another side effect that I couldn t believe when I read it. Sudden Death. I see looking up the same drugs on Your site today and it doesn t mention either one. My question is why was that information removed from Your site or is it maybe still there and it is under some other field and I haven t found it.

hi i have a newborn she is 3 weeks old. she is breastfed and feeds often with many wet nappies per day. she poos on average only every 2nd day. a few days ago her weight confirmed she has put on almost 500gms in 1 week. Howover the last 24 hours she has been very unsettled, with a bloated tummy which has been making alot of loud gurgling noises all day, accompanied by 3 soiled nappies but only lightly soiled with very watery yellow poo. she keeps wanting to feed but it seems only for comfort as her tummy seems very full and hard. she sounds like she is constantly straining which makes her bring up small amounts of milk even as long as 40mins after a feed. what do you think is wrong with her and what should i do to settle her if she is already full?
