Would Refraining From Alcohol Improve Liver Function Tests?

I had a Gamma GT reading of 85 and have slight fatty tissue on my liver (identified in an ultrasound scan). My doctor has told me that if I refrain from alcohol for 6 months I would then be able to drink within my female weekly limit. Is this correct?

Hi there,

I'd agree with your doctor. A GGT reading of 85 isn't particularly high and a slightly fatty liver is common, especially if you have a typical western diet. Having a couple drinks a week probably won't hurt you, but the more important thing is to adjust your diet. I'd really try to limit foods high in cholesterol and salt, and try to incorporate more fruits and vegetables in your diet. Limiting the amount of red meat will help you as well.

I hope this answers your question. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.
