Will Taking 'flagyl' Again During Pregnancy Cause Any Harm To The Baby?

Hi Doc,

My name is Mansi, I am 27 yrs old, height - 5"2', weight - 75 kg.

My seventh month has started today, this is my second pregnancy. I had a miscarriage after 8 weeks in my first pregnancy.

I had loose motions from 5th September to 7th September, I was advised Flagyl 200 mg, 3 times a day for 3 days. I was ok by 10th Sept.

Yesterday I had paneer paratha at home in the morning and had loose motion again in the evening. so last night I took flagyl 200 mg again.

I just want to know whether taking this medicine again for 3 days will have any adverse effect on the baby. Pls advise.

Hi Mansi,
Welcome to HCM!

Flagyl is basically Metronidazole.

It is included in FDA Category B : which means no proven risk in humans.

It is quite controversial whether to use Flagyl in pregnancy or not. However, till date, no any side effects or adverse effects have been reported. Hence it is safe to use it.

However, in general, that durg shouldn't be used recurrently. Diarrhea mostly are self limiting and don't need any intervention. All you should take is ORS packets.

Hope this information helps. Feel free to ask if you have any doubts.

With regards
Dr. Sridhar
