When Should Blood Pressure Medication Be Taken?

I am a 62 year old women who is currently taking blood pressure medication as prescribed by my physician. My current blood pressure reading is 132/72. According to the Journal of American Medical Association, adults 60 or older should only take blood pressure medication if their blood pressure exceeds 150/90; which sets a higher bar for treatment than the current guideline of 140/90. Is this true?

Hello
Welcome to health care magic.

Blood pressure medication are not given just on basis of cut off criterias of blood pressure value.
Presence of hypertension related symptoms ,other health risk factors like obesity, smoking, significant family history along with blood pressure value are considered before starting any medication.
This medication has to be taken for long till the symptoms gets improved and BP is controlled.
BP 132/72 is normal and controlled.
Keep having regular check ups with your doctor.
Discontinuing medicine will require consideration of other related risk factors and symptoms
Besides, healthy diet and regular meditation yoga will help you in long run to maintain your BP within normal range.

Hope I answered your query.
