What Might Be Wrong Suffering With Acid Reflux Followed By Intense Coughing And Pain During The Post Operative Recovery Days?

Post op day7 2level acdf and am now experiencing acid reflux, mid back pain and shoulder blade pain. This morning I felt like I could go to work. This evening the opposite! The acid reflux seems to start first followed by intense coughing thus the pain? Oh and I need to add that after this chain of events this weird hug feeling occurs? Is this normal? YYYY@YYYY

Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

You have not mentioned the cause for which surgery was done.

Your symptoms are suggestive of erosive lesions of the food pipe (called erosive esophagitis) due to reflux of acid. Pain is due to erosive esophagitis.

Throat irritation due to reflux of acid into the throat is the cause of intense coughing. A Prokinetic drug, such as, metoclopramide, along with anti-acid drugs (called PPIs) will stop acid reflux and thereby, cough.

Consult your doctor and apprise him of my opinion. I am certain that he will agree with me and prescribe the advised medicines in appropriate doses.

If you find my response helpful and informative, do not forget an “excellent” (5-star rating) to my answer, to ENCOURAGE ALL doctors- engaged in social service- to render sound advice to the FREE queries.

Take care
