What Medication Is Suggested For Habitual Constipation?

I have habitual constipation. So I usually take Naturolax twice daily. 13.3.14 I had no motion and feeling pain on my assending colon . So I took Cremaffin 15 ml. Doctor prescribed me to take cefixim 200 + ofloxacin 200 twice daily, lactulose 15ml thrice daily. I took lactulose 10ml on 14.3.14 at 11 pm along with antibiotic. In 15.3.14 morning I had three times loose motion, felt restless, uneasy, thrust, very week. Should I continue lactulose.

Hello,

I share your concern and I can understand your problem. Yes, you should continue with Lactulose 30ml at bed time, have lots of water and other fluids. If Lactulose and Paraffin doesn't work than you may require an enema or bowel wash under medical supervision. Since you haven't mentioned which is suggestive of infection so in my opinion Cefixime and Ofloxacin is not required, you should stop both these medicines after consulting with your doctor.

To counter habitual constipation I would advise you to take lots of fresh fruits and vegetables with dietary fiber supplement which will help by increasing bulk of stool and facilitate bowel evacuation. You should increase your fluid intake to 4-5 liters a day.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to ask for follow up question and I will gladly answer you.

Best wishes,
Dr. B R Hudda
