I have been taking novo-risedronate 35mg weekly for over ten years, It does not seem to help with broken bones, I had 3ribs and scapula broken when I missed a step on the stairs in June 2012. In May of 2013 I broke a rib one rib and a brake on the right side of my right hand when I was tripped by a persons cane while I was passing on the side walk, they changed direction . The medication does not seem to be helping my bone density????

Hi there.

Measure of bone density is done by measuring persons BMD.

The best bisphosphonate I find in my practice is Alendronate. It comes under the brand name Alenost D.

Nowadays once a year intravenous infusions of Zolendronic Acid are also available....it has good potency.

To improve your bone strength further I would advise you to start Teraperatide (parathyroid hormone ) injections. They are marketed under brand name Forteo......but are a bit expensive.
They are the only available preparation in the markrt which increase bone mass.

Also dont forget to take regular calcium supplements.

I hope my advice has helped
Good luck

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Devesh Bandil's  Response
hi it is gr8 to know you are being proactive in taking care of your bones
the residronate 35 mg as you are taking as a weekly dose is a class of drug known as bisphosphonates known to help increase your bone density by decreasing the resorption of calcium from bones so if you taking it is good but an better alternate is IV infusion of zoledronic acid 5mg which is given once a year along with calcium supplementation or still better is use of Teri-peptide injections taken daily as insulin injections are taken
but the crux is you have to take calcium supplementation also to actually help calcium absorption and vitamin c to aid in absorption
as far as which calcium is better studies shows that calcium citrate is a safer option available
