Hi,my father celebrated his 70th birthday recently. He suffered a stroke eight years ago and has been paralyzed on the left side of his body ever since. Unfortunately he had a second attack 2 months ago and now and his condition is not any better. Now he can not sit or walk which at least he used to do before with the help of a stick. His BP is in control as he is regularly taking medicine (Betaloc 25mg)twice a day. He weighs about 68 kg. The Doctor told me that he would be able to walk like before within 2 months time .Its more than two months now he is totally dependant for everything still except taking a few steps with the help from others. Will his condition improve? He is taking Nutrilite protein with oats , vegetables and fruit juices. .Could you tell me what other Nutrilite suppliments will be helpful for him. He has no strength or balance in his legs and complains of pain when he is made to stand or walk. Please Advise. Thanks, B.K Rai to take physiotherapy regularly which I am taking
dear friend as far as nutrition is concern, you are doing well for him. presently you have to improve his balance strength of muscle and coordination. these all can be improved by proper physiotherapy exercise. you have to include exercise to improve strength of upper and lower limb muscles especially leg muscle quadriceps. improve posture. ask physio. to go for gait training.
Hello ! I read your question and understand your concern. In my opinion there is no true medication which will help your father. Only physiotherapy is the only thing which can give true results at this point . A stroke destroys cerebral cells , and they don't regenerate. The body tends to get used to the destroyed area and adjacent brain areas gain control of that motor function. A second stroke make things more difficult, as the possibility of gaining motor function decreases . A stroke can just be prevented , using diet, BP controlling drugs, statins as hypolipemiant agents and anti-platelet agents like Aspirin or Anticoagulants if heart problems are cause of stroke. I would strongly recommend physiotherapy , but you should be patient . You can have good results most in the first 6 month up to 1 year after the stroke . Hope to have been helpful! Best wishes , Dr. Abaz Quka
