Hi there! There are broadly 2 kinds of fungi which could infect skin. one type needs keratin to grow like Trichophyton or epidermophyton because of which it tends to grow on Skin Nails n Hair where Keratin is abundant. These do not grow inside the body.
While Candida can grow on skin and inside the body too. Mostly moist areas like Groin, Vagina etc. For nail infection especially toe nails the medication needs to be taken for a long time because the drug concentration patterns in these areas need them to be so.
Hopefully this helps.
