What Is The Cause Of Symptoms Of Cushings Syndrome When On Prednisone?

My husband id in hospital, after his hemaglobin was tested at 4.6. Has had 6 units of blood, plus finished 2 units iron, also has had a gastoscopy/colonscopy, and going to do more exploritary. Ron Has been on Prednisolone seen 2000, due to being dignosed with Polymyagia rhematica by a specialist. Under 10mg daily all his symtoms come back. They now think he has cushings syndrome as he shows all signs, and I think this is due to the Prednisolone. I am getting worried as he is not improving.........do you have any advice for me............Marion

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI,
Cushings syndrome is due to elevated cortisol in blood due to steroids he used. As they are necessary for him, he has to only taper them over a long time before total withdrawal to avoid adrenal crisis.
While tapering them, he may require drugs to mitigate his immune activity to and to keep his polymyalgia in check. This is best done by a rheumatologist on case to case basis.
So you need to consult a rheumatologist who will find a solution for your problem.
All the best.
