Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Is Causing My Son S Fever, Vomiting And Cough?
My child is suffering from fever, he has been vomiting 4 to 5 times per day. He has been having very bad cough and runny nose. He is coughing like elderly people. He has loose stools. The doctor has prescribed Bactrim and bricanyl syrup, he is throwing up the medicines too along with the food. The vomit contains some phlegm too. My son is 6 months old and he is now in the teething stage. Can somebody help me? I am very depressed with his situation.
It seems your kid is having viral diarrhea. Once it starts it will take 5-7 days to completely get better. Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting, you need not worry. There is no need to use antibiotics unless there is blood in the motion. Antibiotics might worsen if unnecessarily used causing antibiotic associated diarrhea. I suggest you use zinc supplements (Z&D drops) and ORS as hydration is very important and crucial part of treatment. If there is vomiting you can use Syrup Ondansetron (as prescribed by your pediatrician).
Regarding diet
- Avoid fruit juices as they might aggravate diarrhea. You can give zinc supplements and ORS apart from normal vegetarian porridge and soups.
THIS SEEMS TO BE VIRAL AND SELF LIMITING - SO DO NOT USE TOO MANY COUGH SYRUPS AS THE SUGAR CONTENT IN THEM MIGHT CAUSE OSMOTIC DIARRHEA AND PROLONG THE DURATION OF DIARRHEA.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
