What Does The Following Ultrasound Report Indicate?
My Brother Going To Ultra sound Report says: Liver (15.6cms) is enlarged in size and shows increased echogenicity. prominent intrahepatic biliary duts or focal lesions noted. no evidence of free fluid in the abdomen Impression: Hepatomegaly with diffuse fatty change
The summary states that the findings indicate hepatomegaly with diffuse fatty change.
Hepatomegaly means that the liver is enlarged. Diffuse fatty change means that there is a build up of fat in a large area of the liver. This can be due to different causes but the most common are: (1)due to alcohol use or (2) non alcoholic fatty liver disease
Non alcoholic fatty liver disease is more common in persons who may be overweight/obese, inactive, diabetic, high cholesterol, hypertensive. One of more of these may be present.
Treatment for non alcoholic fatty liver involves diet changes, activity and in some cases, statins.
In the case of fatty liver due to alcohol, the most effective treatment is discontinuation of alcohol use. This would not reverse the changes but prevent further changes.
I hope this helps
