What Does The Following Transvaginal Scan Report Suggest?
Dear Mr.Dr I have done TVS diagnosis of my wife aged 47 on the advise of her Doctor Here is what report says: Endometrium..5.9 m.m Uterus- Retroverted in position Endometrial cavity....Tiny polyp size..10.5x4.6 m.m Minimal fluid in the cavity Cervix bulkier Fluid in the canal Please analyse and let me know what it means and how to treat it.. Kind regards RNY
Dear RNY, You can read this as follows: uterus is in a normal variant position that is facing backwards. There is no problem with this. Myometrium is not reported (the muscular and main component of the uterus). Endometrium - the inner lining of the uterine cavity- is reported along with the virtual space or endometrial cavity: normal thickness for a woman of reproductive age, scarce normal fluid in the cavity and a pathological finding, an endometrial polyp 10 x 5 mm. Normal cervix with canal mucus. No report of the ovaries is seen. A polyp is a frequent finding, it is a benign glandular growth of the endometrium that is usually asymptomatic and an unexpected finding during routine scan. Sometimes they alter the menstrual bleeding pattern with inter menstrual bleeding and or heavy bleeding during menses. In a few cases they can harbor premalignant or malignant changes, specially after 50 YO. This is the reason many clinicians are in favor of removal for diagnosis and treatment. The gold standard for diagnosis and treatment is an operative office hysteroscopy.
