What Does The Following X-ray Report Indicate?

My son had a X-Ray done of the Spine Lumbar... The results are the following: There may be slight straightening of the normal lumbar curvature. A spina bifida occulta defect is noted at S1 and S2. I have done some research on this, however, I want to know if this is to be concerned about. He has a follow up appointment with his doctor scheduled. Thank You.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I understand your concern.

Spina bifida occulta is a birth defect where there is incomplete closing of the backbone and membranes around the spinal cord. In majority of cases, it is not notable until late childhood or adulthood as in case of your son.

There are 4 types of spina bifida: occulta, closed neural tubes defect, meningocele, myelomeningocele.
Your son has spina bifida occulta which is the mildest and most common defect. Bones of the vertebral spine at level S1 are not properly formed.

Although it might sound horrific, it is not. Keep following up regularly with neurologist and orthopedic specialist to track changes later in life and correlate with clinical symptoms.

All the best.
