What Does The MRI Scan Report Mean?

hi i m suffering from slipped disc my mri reports says mild diffuse bulge and focal right extrusion of L5-S1 disc,impining the right exiting L5 nerve root what does it means plz tell me is it a serious matter and i am having pain on my right hip portion my email id is YYYY@YYYY

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

There is degeneration of lumbar spine disc between L 5 and S 1. This is resulting in the disc herniating between the bones. The nerve roots pass through these neural foramina and you might have severe nerve root compression at that level more on the right side where the exiting L 5 nerve root is compressed.

The nerve pain may be controlled with restricted physical activity and pain relief medication. Please do not do heavy physical activity till you are comfortable. Surgery is not always indicated with small disc bulges but pain control measures must be taken. There are medications given for neurogenic pain and it works in most patients. You may also apply muscle relaxants and pain relief ointments.
