What Does Starr Procedure Mean?

i am an army officer presently serving in CI Operational area in the kashmir valley. I have undergone surgery for fissures chronic. today i read an article in dna paper which says that 15% of piles , fistula patients suffer obstructed defecation and seem that i may suffer from the same decease. due to this problem i am facing a lot problem specially when we are away on operation duties and it requires to go to the bathroom a number of times or you remain hungry for the period you are away. I have been opted for the said fissure in 1988,1996 and 2007. still the rectum doesn t work properly and stool remain stuck about 5-6 from the anus which needs to be cleared by the finger and a lot of mucus comes out during the process and at later stages. so please tell me about STARR procedure and financial involvement as MRI defecography facilities are not available in the army/navy hosp. It will be a great help to me to discharge my duties in field/peace area as i am suffering from this decease for last 25 yrs. thanks.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* As per my surgical experience, the STARR is the stappled trans anal resection of rectum procedure.
* The procedure involves anatomic correction of the underlying defect as
- Obstructed defecation syndrome
- Rectal intussusception
- Mucosal prolapse - rectocele.

* The procedure details with its advantages, disadvantages all must be thoroughly explained to the patient before proceeding to any of the curative steps.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
