What Does "scattered Areas Of Demyleination In White Matter" Suggest?

Sister will not go back to doctor for fear of results. Here is what I know from her MRI: scattered areas of demyleination bilateral and periventricular white matter. Multiple differential ideologies. She's approximately 5' and weighs approximately 195 lbs. She has other numerous health issues as well.

Hello,

That description refers to multiple small areas of damage in the white matter due to damage to the myelin sheath surrounding the nerve cell axons.

Most commonly that finding is in the setting of multiple sclerosis that is the first diagnosis to be considered. However further tests such as spinal tap, evoked potentials etcetera, are needed to confirm the diagnosis (alongside history and physical exam naturally).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Olsi Taka
