What Does Pelvicalyceal Dilation Indicate?

I am a 75 year old fit and healthy woman with one kidney, as I donated the other one to my son 6 years ago. 2 weeks ago a routine kidney function test revealed an increase of creatinine levels to 185. I was referred to A and E where an ultra sound scan was performed, although my creatinine levels had returned to,80. I was thought to have a blockage of the tube between the kidney and bladder, which proved incorrect after a CT Scan, however I was diagnosed as having pelvicalyceal dilation and have been referred to the urology clinic on 20th October, can you enlighten me as to what this means please? I am passing urine regularly and do not have any discomfort I await your reply many thanks Marion Fry (Mrs)

Hi,
There is a connection between the kidney and ureter, that is called as the pelvicalyceal system. It is in the shape of a triangle, the larger part starting from the mouth of the kidney and the smaller part leading to the ureter.
If there is mild blockage it would start dilating, and as the blockage increases, it will dilate more and it can put pressure on the kidney too.
If it is moderately dilated without any pathology in the ureter or bladder, then nothing to worry.
You can get a ureteroscopy of cystoscopy or dye test to rule out any cause of partial obstruction.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
