What Does Nodule In Rib Cage In Chest X Ray Mean?

I went to the ER yesterday for severe chest pain. After several tests it was determined that stress may be the cause. Today I got a call from the hospital to let me know they detected a nodule on my rib cage from the chest X-ray. What can you share about rib cage nodules.

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

As mentioned by you, I interpret that you are having a bony origin nodule in the rib. This may need additional imaging evaluation by CT scan and then it is possible to narrow down to a group of specific diagnoses. It is most likely to be a benign nodule and something you should get evaluated but not worry about much. A CT scan will give the exact size and location and it might also be possible to give the composition of the nodule and characterize it further.
