What Does A Swollen Lymph Node On The Neck Indicate?

hi, i am 28 years old and I have had a swollen lymph node on my neck for about 7 months now, I just had an ultra sound done to confirm the size and what it is, I started out with dizzy spells and shortness of breath and chest pain and an occasional fever, just felling fatigued and not myself. I am meeting with a general surgeon in a couple of weeks to see what my options are. Although I have some news symptoms which is difficulty swallowing, hearing out of one ear and stiff neck and head. I was just wondering if all of this is normal with a non cancerous node? because some days i feel powered with energy and others its all i can do just to crawl out of bed.

1. Lymph node swelling occurs either in response to injury, infection or tumor in or near to the lymph node, but can also swell if someone has a cold or a sore throat.

PS. As duration is 7 months [chronic] thus the above three causes have to be excluded and the rule of thumb is: If a swollen lymph node in the neck makes breathing or swallowing difficult, seek medical treatment immediately.

2. It is wise to see a general surgeon who will perform a detailed physical examination and depending upon the extent of the problem will order relevant blood tests, X-ray and CT scan of the affected area, and later biopsy of the swollen lymph node may be needed.

PS. although the list is exhaustive, still some of the causes which I do like to exclude in my patient(s) are mononucleosis, lymphoma, multiple sclerosis, preleukemia.
