What Does Focal Left Paracentral And Foraminal Disc Protrusion On Test Reports Mean?

My report says " Foacl Left paracentral and foraminal disc portrusion is seen at L5-S1 Level causing effacement of left lateral recess and fat in left intervertebral neral foramen with compression of left L% and S1 Nerve roots"

Could you pl. explain what does this mean and how serious is this problem

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

There is degeneration of lumbar spine disc between L5 and S1. This is resulting in disc protrusion between the bones. The nerve roots pass through these neural foramina and you might have severe nerve root compression at that level more on the left side. The nerve pain may be controlled with restricted physical activity and pain relief medication. Please do not do heavy physical activity till you are comfortable. You may also apply muscle relaxants and pain relief ointments when necessary. Avoid lifting weights and sudden movements.
