What Do Swelling And Inflammation On The Lips And Hands Indicate?

I am 22 years old, male, and have had random swelling of my lip, jaw, hands periodically for a few months. The ER doctor said it was stress because I was taking finals at college. I went to an allergist and he said it wasn t an allergy it was angioedema. What does this mean and why does it keep happening?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Angioedema is one type of allergic reaction to medications. Did you have taken any medicine on your own or after Doctor’s advice in recent past?

One thing you should keep in mind that Angioedema is a serious condition. You are not having any difficulty breathing but, you need immediate medical attention.

Please go to the Emergency Department as you require shots of Dexamethasone and Chlorpheniramine drugs as early as possible.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Hiren Hirpara
