What Do Heartburn And Delayed Periods With Negative Result In HPT Suggest?

Hi Doctor I have a 28 day cycle period each month, and this month my husband and I tried to conceive. Now my period is 5 days late, but I m having no symptoms ( not even sore breasts), and I have taken a couple of home pregnancy tests and they all came back negative. Plus for two days now, I have been having a heartburn in my stomach, are they related? Thank you and awaiting your response

Hello,

You are suffering from heartburn and delayed periods with negative HPT. You are trying to conceive. Heartburn, bloating or increased gas formation can be a sign of pregnancy. It can feel worse when you bend over or lie down. It’s safe to take an antacid to relieve the burning or bloating sensation.

Avoid taking food that triggers acid reflux and bloating. Take small amount of food, multiple times a day and stay away from oily, spicy junk food. Your HPT test can come negative if you have taken the test too early. If your period doesn't begin, take the test again in a few days or in one week with your first morning mid stream urine sample.

In case you get a negative test result, but your period doesn't start. Or you still think you might be pregnant then you can take a blood test to check for pregnancy, which may be more accurate than a home test. Contact your health care provider. Your provider may do a per vaginal check up to detect bulky uterus or suggest to get USG (Uterus and fallopian tubes) done to detect ectopic pregnancy.

Some health problems may lead to missed periods. If you're not pregnant, your health care provider can help you find out what's causing missed periods. Get required blood and imaging tests done. Stay away from addictions, smoking, drugs, alcohol, etc., done.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
