What Could Cause Itchy Skin, Weird Pricking Sensation On Skin During Tanning Sessions While Being On Doxycycline And Bupropion?

I've been tanning for about a week and have gone almost every day. I go for 8-10 minutes and have gotten burned once (the 3rd day I went). I took a day off for the burn to heal and went back and I started getting a weird sensation about two minutes into my tanning session, like pins are pricking my body everywhere. It usually lasts for about 30 minutes after I'm done tanning. But my skin has been really itchy all the time. I take doxycycline and bupropion daily. I don't know if I should wait to see if it goes away or if I should go to see my doctor? I read somewhere that the uv light could have effected my nerve endings and caused this problem. Please help.

Hi,

You seem to be developing photosensitive allergic skin disease.
Such a photosensitive skin reaction can develop in people who are on tetracycline drugs like doxycycline.
You should see your prescribing doctor and stop or change doxycycline,
Although this drug is usually well tolerated in most people, in few patients it is known to cause photosensitivity.
You should avoid applying any kind of skin irritants like dettol, spirit over it.

You might need to apply a topical steroid cream over the affected area twice a day for few days.
Take some oral antihistamines along.
See a nearby dermatologist if the condition tends to persist despite this therapy.
You might need a course of oral steroids.

Hope it helps,

Dr Geetika Paul.
