What Could Be Black Solid Thing In Ear Causing Pain?

My son has very thick dark ear wax which if we don't clean his ears with a OTC earwax cleaning solution will build up and cause him pain. Today when we cleaned his ears we saw a black solid thing inside his ear canal. He has complained that that ear was hurting and upon looking inside the other ear we do not see the same thing. Any idea what this black solid thing could be and should he go to the ER?

HI.
The wax is basically the dead skin which could not be expelled out of the ear.
The dead tissues become admixed with the sweat in the canal to give wax. This can have varied color and the blackness can be due to concentration or due to old fungus infection.
The pain caould be due to the the eraction one gets , or a trauma of removing the wax.
Take an antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory medicines .
Once the swelling and pain goes away, then only get this removed .
