What Contraceptive Pill Can Be Taken While Suffering From Endometriosis?

I have endometriosis. My doc told me I can choose between a normal birth control pill or having just progestin (depo-provera). I am 47. I m concerned that the birth control pill (having also estrogen) is not really appropriate but it seems to be the one that has less side effects. I don t know what to choose.

Hi & Welcome.

Both the hormonal contraceptives are effective in the treatment of endometriosis.

However, the combined oral contraceptive pills (synthetic oestrogen and progesterone) offer certain advantages like they are inexpensive and usually well tolerated. They can be taken safely for many years if necessary. The have also shown to reduce the risk of ovarian, endometrial and colorectal cancer. They are also effective in controlling the signs and symptoms associated with postmenopause.

So, in view of the above I would recommend a normal birth control pill (combined oral contraceptive pill) to be taken.

Hope these answer your query.
