What Causes Watery Nasal Discharges?

Today I bent over and all of a sudden clear watery liquid poured out of my nose. I was not congested or sick, my eyes were not watering, but it just dripped out very quickly. It happened again about 4 hours later, about a tablespoon of liquid. It was absolutely not normal mucus, I have seasonal allergies, so trust me, I know mucus. This stuff was just like water. What is it and what caused it to just pour out all of a sudden???

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

The most probable cause that should be ruled out asap is leakage from brain to nose through a defect in skull base called herniation. Simple tests of the fluid for glucose can tell more about its cause and area of origin. MRI contrast studies and ventriculography will help further. Nasal endoscopy give additional information.

Another possibility is fluid leaking from a polyp from nose or sinus. CT scan of sinuses will help for a proper diagnosis. The treatment will be as per the cause found as in both cases surgery is different. Closing an skull base needs specially trained surgeon.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
