What Causes Tingling Sensation With Redness And Tenderness In Tip Of Penis?

I am a 31 year old male who is in decent health. About 4 weeks ago I started to get a tingling sensation in my penis (particularly at the tip by the opening where the skin is really quite red and tender). I have been to a GUM clinic who took a swab from my urethra (which came back clear) and tested for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea (both came back negative). I have since been to my GP who has taken a urine sample to test for bacterial infection/UTI. This did not immediately show anything however it has been sent out to lab for final result I believe. I was given a course of Trimethoprim which I started last Thursday. By Monday I had no change in symptoms so the doctor prescribed a one off dose of Azithromycin (1000mg) which I took on Tuesday morning. I have seen no change in my symptoms as yet.My questions are:1) Should the antibiotics have improved my symptoms by now if they were going to work?2) Are there any other STI/STD s which could be causing the symptoms? 3) What other causes for these symptoms could there be? (are there viruses which could cause this and can they be tested for?4) Is there any creams I could use to help ease the tingling/redness on the tip of my penis? (it is just round the urethra opening that is red).I would appreciate some advice on this before I go back to my GP

Hello,

You are suffering from redness and tenderness in the tip of the penis. You have not given any history of your sexual life and partners. However, redness and tenderness at the tip of the penis commonly occurs due to urethritis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes (these are sexually contacted). Non specific urethritis may also be caused without being sexually transmitted. Other medical causes can be UTI, injury, sensitivity or allergy to certain chemical in lubricants or latex.

You should take care of your hygiene, wear soft cotton clothes. If sexually active avoid sex for a couple of days. Do not go for multiple partners. For relief, you can apply ointment Neosporin on the area affected multiple times a day. Drink plenty of water of reduce discomfort. Get STD tests done to stay on the safer side, if positive you will be treated with a course of antibiotics / anti-virals. Get Urinalysis (C/S and R/E) done to detect UTI, you may need to take antibiotics for a week.

If your infection is chronic, it may take repeat course of the required medications to improve the symptoms. Tingling sensation is indicative of nerve damage(neuropathy). It can also be due to injury, low testosterone level, long distance cycling, spinal cord injury or degenerative disease. You can include food good for the nerves in your regular diet. Take food that will increase your testosterone level. You can take supplements also. Stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
