What Causes Swelling And Numbness In Hand After Injecting Heroin?

I just did a shot of heroin in my left hand, on the top of my hand to be exact. It went numb and turned red and swelled up. I did the shot about 20 minutes ago and my hand is still swollen and numb. I cant make a fist and can barely bend my fingers. Should I be concerned?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear user,

I really understand your concern.

Based on your introduction, it's an infection of hand, due to poor technique of injection or if you didn't use a sterile syringe (if so check blood test for hepatitis, HIV/AIDS or syphilis).

For the infection I would prescribe Azythromycin 500mg in the first day, and 250mg day 2 to 5.

Apply ice packets and Ibuprofen 200mg three times daily for swelling

If you don't see improvement in three days, please see a doctor.

All the best!
