What Causes Sudden Pain Behind The Ear?

I have a sudden sharp pain behind my ear and I feel it sometimes when I am at the dentist and my jaws are wide open for a while. I checked with my ear doctor and he said nothing is wrong with my ears... any suggestions? he said it could be nerve related.
