What Causes Sudden Increase In Heart Beat With Shaking Of Hand?
A friend had an episode tonight, where his heart suddenly started to beat rapidly and he noticed his hands were shaking. There was no change in his diet nor was he on any medication, no increase in caffeine and had eaten a balanced breakfast and lunch. Any thoughts?
This can be a cardiac arrhythmia like PSVT or atrial fibrillation, in which heart rate suddenly goes up and also suddenly decreases. Blood pressure falls during these episodes and one has dizziness, tremors, fainting, blackouts, sometimes syncope.
Usually, ECG is normal as it is usually done in between the episodes. ECG done during episodes will show abnormality. He will need 24-hour Holter monitoring. He may need an echo to rule out the possibility of structural heart disease.
So visit a nearby cardiologist for these investigations. Also, haemoglobin and thyroid test should be done. ln order to abort such episodes he should try to cough hard. He may need beta blockers to control this.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Sagar Makode, Cardiologist
