What Causes Spotting And Stomach Cramps In A 60 Year Old Woman?

I am almost 60 years young . I have been going through menopause for about 8 years and am on Prefest. The last 3 days I have been experiencing some staining and cramps similar to when I was younger and menstruating. I have not had a period in at least 15 years. I went on vacation recently and did not take my hormones for 6 days. Could this be the culprit? I have started back on Prefest and also Ibuprofen but still feel like a 16 year old girl with cramps :(

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

and welcome. Pllease consult a gynecologist.
Go for a thorough internal evaluation - per vaginum and per speculum, and a pelvic ultrasound scan done transvaginally.
Also the following tests should be done -
FSH, LH, TSH, Prolactin, FBS, PPBS, HBA1c, Serum estradiol.
This workup is essential.
It will establish -
1. Whether she is truly menopausal.
2. Whether she is having conditions such as endometrial hyperplasia (thickening of the lining of the uterus), fibroids, cysts etc which can cause such a picture.
3. A Pap smear also should be done at her age.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
