What Causes Severe Pain In The Urethra?

I am a 72 year old, healthy, active female. I have pain in the urethra and burning rash on the skin outside the urethra. It comes and goes but is frequent and debilitating. I have been through treatment with two different urologists and they have both dismissed me with the only answer being I don t know . I am at my wits end. One of the urologist took a quick look and said, Oh, that s just dry skin from normal aging He prescribed Premarin to be applied to the skin. The urethra pain (is not UTI) and skin pain seem to appear at the same time. I also suffered from incontinence for 20 years, had 3 sling procedures and one durasphere injection. Every treatment lasted about one year. I am now taking Myrbetriq and it has been like a miracle. Incontinence is now controlled with this drug. Please give me some guidance about the urethra pain and burning rash. I m desperate. .

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

This is most probably UTI, maybe urethritis. Urinary tract infections are a common bacterial infection in women and the risk increases with age.

Women suffer more frequently from recurrent UTI than men because of their shorter urethra and proximity of urethral opening to the anus.

Other predisposing factors in old age include diabetes, urinary tract stones, steroid use, and chronic illness impairing the immune system. Advice

1. Ciprofloxacin 500 mg per oral twice daily for 7 days
2. Syrup alkaline citrate 2 teaspoonfuls three times daily for 15 days
3. Drink plenty of water to flush out bacteria
4. Drink cranberry juice
5. Do not hold your urine. Urinate when you feel
6. Wipe from front to back after bowel movements
7. Urinate after having sex to flush bacteria
8. Investigation – routine examination of urine, culture & sensitivity of urine
