What Causes Severe Cough And Exhaustion Post Upper Endoscopy?

I am a 69, and had an upper endoscopy 5 days ago. 4 Biopsies were taken from different parts of the test and came back fine. However, about 2 days after the test I began to feel exhausted and have developed a severe cough that seems to be getting worse, and preventing me from sleeping. Tomorrow is Monday - should I call my GP or my Gastroenterologist about this.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Severe cough is due to side effect of upper endoscopy. It may be indicative of inflammation, infection, swelling due to injury. Get your GP informed urgently so that you can be treated before the coughing gets worse and you develop swallowing problems or vomiting due to inflammation or bleeding.

In the meantime take liquid diet, stay well hydrated and talk less. Gargle your throat with warm water 2-3 times a day. Keep cough lozenges in the mouth to stop coughing and get relief. Left untreated you may develop shortness of breath or symptoms of pneumonia. Pneumonia is one of the most common complications following endoscopy. Get treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
