What Causes Seizures After An Open Heart Surgery?

My father-inlaw had a valve repaired in his heart. Surgery was difficult but he survived. Now his kidneys are functioning at 10 percent. He was given dialysis to boost kidneys. He now has liver disease due to his excessive drinking over a number of years. He developed seizures after the open heart surgery. What will be his quality of life if he recovers? Can he still be at risk of death?

Hi,

Yes, he is still at risk of death. As you mentioned that he is having liver disease due to alcohol, he is mostly having Cirrhosis of liver. This can cause electrolytes imbalance, raised ammonia levels, hypoglycemia etc. And all these can cause seizures.

All these complications of Cirrhosis are further worsened by kidney failure (as his kidneys are working only 10%). So his prognosis is not good. He may succumb anytime.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
