What Causes Right Sided Chest Pain With Breathing Difficulty?

I am a 19 year old female. A little on the heavy side. Early this morning at about 4:30, I woke up with severe pain in the right side of my chest. I also had a very hard time breathing. I could not sit or lay down because it felt as if the right side of my lung would collapse in. I spent two hours standing up against a wall with my arms above my head trying to breathe and withstand the pain. We called my mom and I could barely get a few words out at a time. I think this was caused because I slept on the floor at a friends. This has happened before at a friends house when the air first got really humid and hot. I had the same symptoms and could not breathe with chest pain on the right side. My mom had me put ice on it and stay close to a freezer or ac unit to breathe in cold air. That episode lasted about 2.5 hours. I also have mild asthma and have had it since I was born. I tried my inhaler, but it did not help.

Pulmonologist 's  Response
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
In my opinion, you should first consult pulmonologist and get done
1. Clinical examination of respiratory system
2. Chest x ray
3. PFT (pulmonary function test).
Chest x ray is needed to rule out lung collapse or lung infection.
PFT is needed to rule out worsening of asthma as all of them can cause similar kind of symptoms.
If all these are normal then possibility of pulled muscle due to sleeping on floor at your friend's home.
So apply ice packs on right chest. Take painkiller like ibuprofen. Avoid movements causing pain.
Don't worry, you will be alright but first consult pulmonologist to rule out lung diseases.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
