What Causes Chronic Left Sided Chest Pain?

Dear Sir, Please note that I have a naggaing pain on the left side of my chest.I have consulted a number of doctors and taken ECG and TMT which are clear and the doctors have said that there is no heart issues. However this nagging pain is persistent. This pain is like that hen we eat pungent food and causes a sort faintness though there is no breathing problem or seating or gripping chest pain.Sometimes this pain is relieved on burping.I do not have any problem related to BP or sugar, but I have hypothyroidism and take eltroxin 50.Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Your symptoms suggest any one of the following conditions:
1) Peptic ulcer disease
2) Gastroesophageal reflux(GERD)
3) Esophagitis
4) Esophageal spasm
5) Hiatus hernia

To those who come to my clinic with peptic ulcer disease, bi recommend the following:
1) Lab tests for H. Pylori organism are done by breath testing
2) Endoscopy if necessary
3) Treatment includes the following:
a) Antibiotics to kill H. Pylori like Amoxicillin, Clarithromycin, Metronidazole
b) H2 receptor antagonists like Famotidine, Nizatidine to be taken twice daily before food
c) Proton pump inhibitors block gastric acid production. They are esomeprazole, Pantoprazole, Rabeprazole
d) Antacids to neutralize the gastric acid
e) Medication that protects the lining of stomach like sucralfate.

4) Head elevation while sleeping
5) Upright posture for at least 40min after food intake.
6) Conditions causing raised intraabdominal pressure like chronic cough are to be treated
7) Avoid alcohol
8) Avoid NSAIDs
9) Manage stress

Hypothyroidism may exacerbate GERD. As you have been on pill, nothing to worry about this. Please discuss the above mentioned treatment options with your physician and get a prescription for medicines.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
