What Causes Redness In Cheeks And Chin After Tonsilectomy?

My 11 yr old son had his tonsils out yesterday. He had lots of vomiting afterwards & is only sipping on water & gatorade. They prescribed hydrocodone for pain but he said it burned his throat so they told me to give him tylenol. His right cheeck was very red last night and by this morning both cheeks and his chin are very red & puffy . What could be causing this?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about your 11 year old boy undergoing tonsillectomy, pain was treated with Hydrocodone and later was given Tylenol that is Acetaminophen also called as Paracetamol. Paracetamol is not known to cause such redness as you have mentioned. Hydrocodone or other medicines like antibiotic might have been the cause. It is practically difficult to know what caused redness over cheeks and chin.

An actual examination, detailed history can know the cause. This is very rare, so much so that I have read about such thing for the first time in my life. Well, the team of doctors including a pediatrician alone can explain about the things better. May need detailed investigations and treated as per the cause found. Also, watch for the things you or the staff of Hospital gave him like any fruit juice and so on.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
