Hi, I am a 21 year old girl. I was a smoker for 4 years. I quit four weeks ago when I started to feel a lump in my throat. I then noticed a cluster of small red spots at the back of my tongue and one on the centre/back of tongue. They are painless and soft to touch. Should I be worried? I have looked up a lot of websites which seem to indicate oral cancer. I am also concerned as neurofibramatosis runs in my family, they can be prone to tumours etc? Basically my question is should I check it out?
I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..
As per your complain the red bumps at the back of tongue seems to be Inflamed Circumvallate Papillae which are present in the back one thirds of tongue and are arranged in a typical "V" shaped pattern and are naturally a bit raised structures.. They can be chronically swollen due to chronic irritation caused by heat and chemicals present in cigarette smoke and commonly are not signs of any serious underlying disease.. You can do warm saline gargles, do soda bicarb gargles, take anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen and suck ice pops.. Drink plenty of water.. Avoid hot and spicy food.. Hopefully the swelling will resolve in a week or ten days and in case of no improvement consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated..
Hope this information helps..
Thanks and regards. Dr.Honey Nandwani Arora.
