What Causes Prolonged Vaginal Bleeding?

hi... my last period began 18 february and ive been bleeding ever since. 3 days of normal bleeding but now each day, nothing then light pink disharge then a light bright red bleed. i have pelvic pain, back pain, i urinate frequently whether a little or normal. there is blood in my urine. my bleeding does have an unpleasant odor to it. i am fatigued, i am also anorexic. have been for 24 years but have managed a steady weight in past year. have lost almost 1.5kilos in a matter of 10 days. was 35.7 now 34.2kilos. i do feel nauseated and i seem to bloat at the tiniest thing i eat which is very frustrating. i am emotional and tired all the time. my last intimate experience was 23rd january.. im worried about cancer actually as it runs in the family..or maybe its an STD??? i dont know what to think.. but these are my symptoms and thankyou for listening.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Irregular vaginal bleeding can be caused by both STD and cancer and many times due to hormonal dis-balances (most common cause).

To determine the cause of it you will need to have a good vaginal exam and then the doctor will determine the need for pap smear, taking sample for chlamydia and gonorrhea and also if you are over 35 years of age and bleeding the doctor might ask for endometrial biopsy as well.

If all these come out normal then dysfunctional uterine bleeding (due to hormone dis-balances) can be considered and the doctor might give you oral contraception for a few months to help with it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
