What Causes Prolonged Period?

So I started my period 2 1/2 weeks early, and it has lasted 13 days, consisting of normal like blood, large clots and a jelly like substance. My periods are normally very regular and consistent. I have been off birth control for a year. I have been to my gyno for blood tests. I m not anemic, not pregant, and there is no abnormalities in my thyroid. I m getting frustrated because this is all very abnormal for me and my Dr. has this wait abnormal and see mentality. I know my body. This isn t normal. Bleeding for 13 days is not normal. Please give me an idea of what s going on. -Rachel

hi there,
Dear Rachel,
i have understood your concern. I will suggest you the best possible treatment option.

1.First of all do not panic.

2. As you are not on any type of birth control method, I will suggest you to rule out pregnancy .Please,I will suggest getting morning’s first sample of urine tested for pregnancy.
In case of doubt blood beta HCG test and USG can be done to confirm or rule out pregnancy.

3. If your pregnancy test is negative , then I will suggest you a course of Tranexamic acid and Mefenamic acid combination to control your bleeding. Your treating doctor can help you for doses and prescription of the same.

4. if at all pregnancy test is positive, then USG should be done, to know the condition of the uterine cavity. If required , procedure like curettage will be needed.
