What Causes Palpitations And High Blood Pressure While On Carbimazole?

Hi Doctor, I ve been treating for hyperthyroidism for the last 9 months (7 months @ 10mg Carbamizole, reduced to 5mg in the last 6 weeks). I had a blood test a couple of days ago and been told to stop medication right away, as I have now sub-clinical hypothyroidism, My question is is it because of over-treatment? Is it common? And will things just go back to normal? I didn t have any symptoms until 7 months later when I started having palpitations and now I have high blood pressure... Not sure why I have these symptoms now only after treatment... Would you be able to shed some light?

Hello,

You may be suffering from autoimmune thyroiditis. It can present like the stage of hyperthyroidism followed by euthyroidism followed by hypothyroidism.

But this scenario does not occur in all patients. In case of stage of hyperthyroidism treated with symptomatically. Probably now you may have hypothyroidism or rebound hyperthyroidism.

So please check it out your thyroid profile once again. Check for Thyroid peroxidase antibodies. If symptoms not improved please consult your physician he will examine and treat you accordingly.
