What Causes Painful Abdominal Bloating And Nausea Before Menstruation?

I get awful pain in my thoracic spine and right under my ribs as well as painful bloating and nausea hours before I get my period and I haven’t found anything that helps the pain subside, I can’t sleep or eat and I’m just completely miserable for an entire day before I finally start my period. This doesn’t happen every month sometimes it’s every other month or every 3-6 months but I never know when it’s going to happen. I’ve tried stretching my back, taking baths, heating pads, tens unit, acetaminophen, muscle relaxers, and NOTHING helps!! I have gotten a vaginal ultrasound to check for cysts and they found that everything is normal and healthy. Do you have any idea what it might be?

Hi,

You are having primary dysmennorhea, its normal and many women experience it. Level of prostaglandin increases before menstruation and triggers muscle contractions to expel the lining of the uterus. This discomfort is due to hormonal changes (PMS), family history, heavy periods, smoking, etc.

Use heating pads on your pelvic area or back, do regular exercises, take warm baths, nutritious meals, stay relaxed. Take Omeprazole (PPIs) and Spasmol/Spasmo Proxyvon (Combination of Dicyclomine/Tramadol/Paracetamol) when you have discomfort.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K,
