What Causes Pain In The Groin Area, Hip And Buttocks?

I have pain in groin, hip, buttocks, front and back of leg in both legs but much more in left. When the pain is most severer, the bottom of my feet feel numb. My lower is also back also very painful. I thought it was a lower back issue but now I m wondering if it is a hip issue. An L5-S1 fusion surgery has been recommended. I am very apprehensive about back surgery. What are some things I should consider?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I read your message and understood your problem.

It seems you have a back trouble due to a damage in your spine (vertebrae or discs). The degenerative process causes stress to the nerves which make you feel the symptoms of pain and numbness.

Correcting the spine problem will relieve the leg's disturbances as well.

Before surgery consider not to take any blood thinner drug. Avoid vitamin E and fish oil too. Ask your doctor if you can take aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs.

Avoid alcohol one week before surgery and two weeks after surgery. Avoid smoking too or replace it with nicotine supplements.

The week before surgery eat food that are rich in fiber and drink plenty of water. This will help you avoid constipation after surgery. You can take over the counter fiber supplements. Moving helps in maintaining a good intestine movement.

After surgery will may stay some days in hospital (usually is 2-3 days or more). When you get home follow the doctor's instructions and maintain a good body hygeine to avoid infections.

I hope this was helpful for you.
