What Causes Pain In Tailbone Area And Lower Back With Elevated WBC Count?

Hello..My husand was a patient at Mayo 9 years ago....he is doing fine...I have questions about my Mom. 82, who is seeing an orthopedic doc in Sprfld, il.. She has always been healthy but now experiencing what she calls really weird painful area near her tailbone, lower back..xrays have show a little inflammation, white bloodcells slighltly elevated...prednisone not helping pain..so next step is probably an MRI but they are talking about her spine narrowing or something and I am worried it could be debilitating..as she already is walking less.....ps. she had 6 childen, a farm wife, and always a bundle of energy..of course We thought Arthritis at first....do you have any ideas?

Hello,

Pain in the tailbone is commonly caused by trauma to the coccyx during a fall, prolonged sitting on a hard or narrow surface, degenerative joint changes, coccydynia, etc. Pain in the tailbone is a localized pain that worsens when sitting or with any activity that puts pressure on the bottom of the spine. Your mother should sit on a doughnut-shaped pillow or wedge (V-shaped) cushion. She should lean forward while sitting down to ease discomfort.

Apply heat or ice to the affected area effectively eases pain. She can take acetaminophen (Tylenol) or Combiflam, one SOS after food for relief. Physical therapy is recommended. A physical therapist might show her how to do pelvic floor relaxation techniques and exercises. Massaging the muscles attached to the tailbone gently eases pain. Give her home made nutritious food to boost immunity. Get her clinically examined and treated at the earliest. Her treating doctors may recommend antidepressants, etc., to relieve tailbone pain. The doctors mar suggest coccydectomy when other treatments fail.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
