My 14 year old son has a painful and swollen belly button. He has an outy anyway, but i can tell it is swollen when I look at it. Has been bothering him for 2 days. The skin around the belly button, on his stomach, does not hurt, but the bb does hurt him when he touches it. Should I get him to dr?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Umbilical hernia could be the cause and this can be confirmed by a direct clinical examination. Other causes to be ruled out are indigestion and constipation which may cause belly button pain but swelling may not occur in such conditions.

All causes of acute abdomen such as appendicitis, diverticulitis, pancreatitis and gall stones may have to be ruled out in case of severe pain. Abdominal ultrasound can be done to rule out the above conditions. In case of umbilical or para umbilical hernia, surgery will be required.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
