I am 62 years ol, 5 feet, 6 inches tall. My weight is 249 and I am currenty involved with a weight loss support group. I have a colostomy. The last two days I have been having some pain around my stoma and on the left side of my stomach. I am having a mucus discharge coming from my stoma. Sometimes it looks like there may be some blood in the discharge. Could it be tghat I have a stomach bug ?
Colostomy can have some problems like infection at the outlet, colitis or enterocolitis as a commonest cause of mucus in stool and pain around stoma. This can be diagnosed by the following: Tests of stool for three consecutive days. Colonoscopy and biopsy. A proper course of an antibiotic active against colon infection, metronidazole and probiotics may help to resolve the problem. Further investigation report will guide further. Avoid the foods and beverages that you feel is exaggerating your problems. Continue with home made foods only and take plenty of oral fluids.
Take care.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. T Chandrakant, General & ENT Surgeon
