What Causes Occasional Pain In Buttocks?

I am a 40 yr old female who has had occasional pains in my buttock for the last 8 years. I first remember the pains when I was expecting my 3rd child. I thought it might be sciatic nerve pain but my OB said no because the pain did not extend down my leg. The pains are sharp and stabbing and only last a few seconds but often cause me to almost fall over. I have noticed that I have days at a time when the pains are more frequent and then go for weeks without any pain. Pain is not relieved by ibuprofen or massage and does not seem to be associated with exercise. Any thoughts on what might be going on?
