What Causes Nausea, Vomiting And Sleeplessness After A Total Knee Replacement?

My 67 year old husband had total knee replacement three weeks ago and the knee is great. He started getting nauseous a week ago and was vomiting, freezing and unable to sleep. Still eating very little. Taking Advil and two over the counter sleeping pills. Still no sleep. Could he have an infection without a fever?

Hello and welcome to HCM,
Infection without fever is rare.
There is no symptom pertaining to knee thus the knee replacement surgery has not developed any complication.
Nausea, vomiting, freezing and inability to sleep does not seem to be associated with knee replacement therapy.
Nausea and vomiting can occur as a side effect of drugs used in general anaesthesia.
However, this occurs a day or two after giving general anesthesia.
Development of these symptoms a week after surgery is unlikely to be due to anaesthesia.
Thus, these symptoms seem to be due to gastrointestinal upset.
I suggest you to discontinue the over the counter sleeping pills if they are not effective.
I suggest you to consult a physician for treatment of these symptoms.
Anti-emetic drug may be required to control vomiting and nausea.
Light food and relaxation techniques are indicated to control the symptoms of nausea, vomiting and sleeplessness.

Thanks and take care
